The team were runner-ups at the area tournament that took place in Stigler on January 18.

After losing their first round, the team won the next four. Two of the rounds (which included the final round) were particularly suspenseful as they ended in a tie and the winner had to be determined by a single question.

The team was headed by starters Madeline Brennan, Bailey Pickle, Kenny Ni, Shelby Zink, with players Haley Zheng and Emily Teague subbing in when needed. The team was accompanied by assistant coach Tonya Vick, who teaches English at PHS, and Victoria Fisher, PHS’s Spanish teacher. Head coach Tom Brennan could not attend due to scheduling conflicts.

Poteau seniors were able to choose four career sessions to attend while college representatives were set up for the duration of the conference to answer any questions the students had about applications, enrollment, financial aid, and other opportunities offered.  Guest speakers came with plenty of wisdom to share with the students about experiences in their career field as well as wisdom on how to reach their goals. Speakers were encouraged to have open and honest conversations with the seniors about things such as salary, realistic expectations, work ethic, and communication skills.

Seniors, like all Poteau High School students, were given the task of creating an account on the OKCareerGuide.org  which gave them the opportunity to complete three different career assessments based on their career interests, personal skills confidence, and work values.  From this valuable data, we were able to focus on the top career choices where the students showed the most interest. Business, Health Science, Human Services, and Communications were among the top picks.  Specific careers such as nurse practitioner, pharmacy, athletic training, law enforcement, business, news anchor and production, and psychology and counseling were among those represented at the conference. For students interested in other training options besides college, KTC had their booth set up to offer information on special skills-training for a wide variety of careers.  Colleges such as OU, EOSC, NSU, Carl Albert State College, OSU Tech, the University of Tulsa, and UAFS were represented for students to gain one-on-one information to wrap up any last questions and to note any approaching deadlines.

10 WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON https://poteaupiratelog.com/5510/health-beauty/10-ways-to-manage-stress-this-holiday-season/ https://poteaupiratelog.com/5510/health-beauty/10-ways-to-manage-stress-this-holiday-season/#respond Mon, 30 Dec 2019 15:25:46 +0000 https://poteaupiratelog.com/?p=5510 Now that the holiday season has arrived, it is time to get all of your friends the perfect gift, your parents the perfect gift, your boyfriend/girlfriend the most amazing gift, all while still being in high school juggling grades and taking finals. While this is still going through your mind you somehow have to study and pass all of your high school classes and if you’re a concurrent enrollee you have to find the time to study for those finals.

Though this is stressful, it is not good for your health to stay stressed for long periods of time. Stressing for long periods of time can cause heart problems, blood pressure issues, respiratory problems, stomach discomfort, and other problems.   Read more about the long term effects of stress at https://www.apa.org/helpcenter/stress-body.

With this being said, being stressed all of the time is not good for your health, but don’t worry, here 10 ways to destress:

    1. Take ten to fifteen minutes to yourself. Use this time to try out that facemask that has been in your room since the summer, or to paint your nails with that polish you’ve been eyeing at the drug store since last week.
    2. Have a dance party, while you’ve been stressed your muscles have been tense. It’s time to let loose and have fun!
    3. If your not into dancing, stretch it out! Stretching your once tense muscles will help you become loose and ready to tackle any problems coming your way.
    4. Take a couple of minutes to just breathe, don’t do anything else just take some deep breaths and focus on your breathing.
    5. Maybe you’re in your head too much, in this case I would suggest taking a walk outside. This can help clear your mind and help you regain your focus.
    6. If you are stressing about how you will ever start on all of the tasks at hand you should create a list. Creating a list helps keep you on track and helps keep distractions away.
    7. Listen to music, if your studying or just trying to catch up on overdue work listen to music. Listening to music helps you focus, but don’t listen to music that is just going to make you sing instead of working.
    8. Maybe you aren’t getting enough rest, maintaining an eight hours of sleep will help you relax.
    9. Take a long hot shower or bath, add some lavender oil to help you feel tranquil.
    10. Speaking or essential oils, it is said that eucalyptus can help you destress, go out and get a eucalyptus scented candle and burn it while you take a hot bath.

I know that high school and college are stressful but remember to still make time to let loose and have fun. It may seem like a never ending workload but you can do this you will become successful!

THE YEAR OF ADAM DRIVER: “MARRIAGE STORY” REVIEW https://poteaupiratelog.com/5507/entertainment-technology/the-year-of-adam-driver-marriage-story-review/ https://poteaupiratelog.com/5507/entertainment-technology/the-year-of-adam-driver-marriage-story-review/#respond Thu, 19 Dec 2019 13:54:00 +0000 https://poteaupiratelog.com/?p=5507 Arguably the best male performance of the year is Adam Driver for his role as Charlie Barber in Noah Baumbach’s ‘Marriage Story’. As the title suggests, the film tells the story of a marriage… through the couple’s divorce.

The role of Charlie is one with a significant amount of material to grind through. Since the film is based on Baumbach’s own divorce, Charlie is very much Baumbach’s self-insert character, and the protagonist of the story.

Charlie finds himself in a difficult situation: his estranged wife Nicole (played by Scarlett Johansson) has hired a ruthless divorce attorney (Laura Dern) in Los Angeles, requiring Charlie, a proud New Yorker, to put his own career on the line in order to travel back and forth to handle the divorce and see their son, Henry.

Laura Dern’s Nora is ruthless and determined to paint Charlie as the bad guy in his relationship with Nicole. When Charlie hires an equally ruthless lawyer (Ray Liotta), much of the same happens, just vice versa.

In this way, Baumbach successfully paints the system as the villain of the story. Both Charlie and Nicole are relatable and sympathetic characters, albeit with some serious flaws. Charlie can be stubborn and oblivious to the wants of other people, especially his wife, while Nicole is a naturally restless person who, throughout the movie, often caves to the wills and opinions of others, and in particular Nora.

Johansson is horribly miscast in the role of Nicole. Baumbach understands that an actress cast opposite Adam Driver in a film about a couple getting a divorce has to be able to hold their own against Driver, especially in argument scenes; Johansson can’t. She has about four facial expressions that she uses in a regular rotation, and the fact that she has been nominated over the far more talented Lupita Nyong’o for Us, is maddening.

Driver, on the other hand, gives the best performance of his career as well as the best male performance of the year. With a simple quiver of the lip Driver can portray more emotion than more experienced actors could with a monologue.

The range of his acting ability is best represented in three crucial scenes in the latter half of the film. The first is during a fight scene with Nicole, in which Charlie finally lets back all of the anger and frustration he’s been holding in a ruthless line: “Everyday I wake up and I wish you were dead!” Charlie screams. “Like, if I could guarantee that Henry would be okay, I wish you would get an illness and get hit by a car, and die!”

The pure amount of emotion Driver exhibits in two simple sentences is insane and unlike any other actor working today, especially how his voice, while still yelling, cracks when he mentions their son.

The second moment comes when Driver sings, in an impressively good singing voice, Stephen Sondheim’s Being Alive from Company. The song has a strong connection to Charlie’s journey in the film thus far, and Driver imbues an incredible amount of emotion into the song.

The final moment is at the end of the film, when Charlie reads the letter Nicole wrote to him at the beginning of the film. Driver perfectly portrays the subtle heartbreak of realizing that love has passed you by.

Marriage Story is an entertaining watch as well as an emotional one. It manages to perfectly convey the complexity of human relationships as well as the hard ins and outs of divorce in a story that is raw, well acted, and human.

FOOTBALL TEAM TAKES STATE https://poteaupiratelog.com/5494/sports/football-team-takes-state/ https://poteaupiratelog.com/5494/sports/football-team-takes-state/#respond Tue, 17 Dec 2019 23:11:59 +0000 https://poteaupiratelog.com/?p=5494 The state final game was held in Edmond at the University of Central Oklahoma stadium. It was only the fourth time Poteau has even competed in the finals.

Last year, the Pirates advanced to the semifinals before being defeated by Tuttle in Jenks. That was not enough for the team, though. They wanted to go all the way.

The pressure was on for the Pirates to win. Mayor White declared December 6th ‘Beat the Eagles Day’ and schools across the county sent cards to the football coaches. Despite the pressure, many players on the team felt excitement more than fear.

Many of the players were incredibly confident leading up to the big game, like seniors Easton Francis and BJ Kniesley.

“I wasn’t really nervous. I took it as just another game,” said quarterback Easton Francis.  “just a bigger stage.”

“It was more excitement than anything,” BJ Kniesley, #7, said.  “We had it in the bag.”

However, some players, like Jaydin Mankin, did not feel similarly.

“I was 100% nervous,” Mankin said.  Mankin scored Poteau’s only touchdown during the game. “The feeling was great, but [winning] it with my brothers was the best feeling,” he said, regarding the moment he entered the endzone.  To see more of the Pirate Log’s interview with Mankin, click here

Playing in a state championship can be intimidating, but Francis likes to get in the right headspace by listening to music. He also recommends this to other people.

“I just listen to music [in the moments leading up to kickoff],” Francis said. “Music should change people; it did me.”

“The words ‘4A State Championship’ will hype anyone up,” said Kniesley of mental preparation.

When the team arrived back in Poteau, they were greeted by crowds of people lining the streets cheering for them. Community members held signs and banners expressing their pride. Police cars led the buses from Spiro to Poteau.

“It’s like an army entering Rome,” said Coach Mike Odom of the football team’s final return to Poteau.

After arriving at the field house, Head Coach Werner personally presented each football player with a medal. Werner called out each of the 67 players’ names by memory.

Jayden: Nervous for sure but excited to play the games with my friends and my family.

Reagan: What were your thoughts after you scored the touchdown?

Jayden: It was exciting, but no better feeling than winning it.

Reagan: How does it feel to be a state champ?

Jayden: it’s still kinda sinking in.  I still can’t believe it really happened; it always felt like a dream.  It’s something we always wanted to accomplish and it’s something our team always wanted for a long time and we finally got it. I don’t know; its just unbelievable.

Reagan: What does it feel like knowing you were part of the team that made history?

Jayden: It’s definitely a big honor, especially to have all our town support us like they have.   Just all the constant recognition we’ve gotten and everything–it is just amazing. I couldn’t ask for anything better.
